Qualiveen

Description: A disease-specific quality of life (QoL) measure for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) who have urinary disorders [1].

Format: 30 items that examine 4 domains: bother with limitations (9 items), frequency of limitations (8 items), fears (8 items), and feelings (5 items). Demographic information also is obtained.

Scoring: Response options are framed as 5-point Likert-type scales, and scores on each item range from 0 (no impact) to 4 (high adverse impact).  Each domain score is computed as an average of the scores for the items it contains. Individual items are equally weighted. An overall QoL score also can be calculated from the mean of the 4 domains, with lower scores indicating better QoL (i.e., no limitations constraints, or negative feelings).

Administration and Burden: Interviewer-administered; Self-administered; Mail-administered. Less than 30 minutes for completion.

Psychometrics for SCI: The Qualiveen was validated in 281 patients with SCI with urinary difficulties. Cronbach’s alpha of .80 for each of the four scales, showing good internal consistency reliability, as well as good clinical validity and reproducibility [1].

Languages: English, German, Dutch, French, Turkish, Italian.

QoL Concept: The Qualiveen is a Health-Related QoL measure of Subjective Well-Being, which corresponds to Boxes C (achievements) and E (subjective evaluations and reactions) of Dijker’s Model.
